Clean eating healthy ketchup recipeYou all asked for it, so here it is. Clean eating healthy ketchup recipe that can be made at home and eaten to your hearts content. Well not literally, but you can definitely have it every day without worrying about your waistline and health.

Clean eating healthy ketchup recipe 1I will be honest with you. This clean eating healthy ketchup doesn't taste like your usual shop bought version. The reason is because it is not made of tomato concentrate, distilled vinegar, high fructose corn syrup, all of which create the famous ketchup taste. What it does have is proper tomato passata, apple cider vinegar and maple syrup. All of these are much nicer to your body, easier on the digestion and healthier. The consistency and texture is very similar to usual ketchup, but if you want to make it thicker make sure you simmer it for even longer than mentioned in the recipe.

I personally am not the biggest fan of ketchup. The only time I eat it is with my sweet potato fries, the combination of these two is just amazing.

As you know I don’t do difficult recipes, so this is another one that take long , is vegan friendly, absolutely no dairy, no refined sugars and simple ingredients that can be bought in any of your local supermarkets. For this clean eating healthy ketchup recipe I have used spelt flour to help thicken it up, however feel free to use any flour (clean flour that is) which you have hanging around in your cupboards. Also if you don’t have maple syrup go for date syrup or coconut syrup, it will still work nicely. I would even try coconut sugar.Clean eating healthy ketchup recipe 4

    Prep Time: 5 minutes
    Cook Time: 45 minutes
    Total Time: 50 minutes

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup (250ml) passata – make sure nothing is added
    • 1 tbsp maple syrup or even less if you want it less sweet
    • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
    • 1 tsp garlic powder (add a bit less if you are not a fan of garlic)
    • 1 tsp onion powder
    • Pinch of salt
    • Optional:
    • Pinch of all spice (not everyone is a fan of this)
    • 1 tbsp spelt flour mixed with ¼ cup water (use only if the ketchup is not thick enough for you)

    Instructions

    1. Mix together the passata, vinegar, maple syrup, garlic powder, onion powder and simmer over a low heat until nice and thick (I would say around 45 minutes)
    2. If the consistency is not good enough for you, mix approx. 1 tbsp of spelt flour with ¼ cup of water, combine (must be very liquidy) and slowly whisk into the ketchup mixture.
    3. Make sure you add it slowly to avoid lumps or any “funny bits”
    4. Place in the jar, let cool down completely and store in the fridge

It will keep for a week in the fridge, just place it in a jar once it has completely cooled down , screw the lid on and place it in the fridge. We consume a ton of hidden sugars in simple things like condiments, so if you want to make a difference to your diet and take small “ clean eating” steps, this clean eating healthy ketchup is the perfect starting point.

I'm not a big fan of ketchup, mostly because of the high fructose corn syrup and other things that they sneak in a perfectly good tomato sauce. This looks and sounds perfect. I need to make my own.

Hello Nic, could be spelt flour, buckwheat, quinoa, but use it only if the ketchup is not thick enough for you. Hedi xxx

My children eat ketchup and I do worry about the sugar content so will try them with this. Could you freeze it? I'm just not sure I'll get through it all in a week and it would be usefull to have some stashed in the freezer.
