Now, as everyone knows, I have a sweet tooth and love eating my raw chocolate and bounty cake in moderation (well most of the time anyway!). Refined sugar is so easy to replace when you’re making your own delicious treats, and fruit is one of my favourite things to use. I was really excited to discover Finnberry bilberry powder as 900g of fresh, wild berries goes into making 100g of powder. There are no other ingredients either, just clean and pure berries handpicked from unpolluted Finnish forests. This means it ticks lots of boxes including vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free and soya-free if that’s important to your way of eating.
You’d probably add this to the list of ‘superfoods’ (although I think any clean food is super), because it’s bursting with antioxidants, is rich in vitamins E, K and minerals copper and manganese. The bilberry powder is also naturally high in fibre but best of all, tastes amazing! If you’ve ever tried acai then this tastes very similar – it has a lovely tang to it along with a familiar blueberry flavor that most of us already know.
There are lots of ways you could use it for a healthy, sweet hit. It’s lovely stirred into plain yoghurt to give it some zing, and is a great addition to a green smoothie as it can help to hide the spinach/kale taste that you may not enjoy as much! And how about bilberry pancakes, or cheesecake, or energy balls? The list just goes on and I’m having trouble deciding what recipe I should use it in first!
I know lots of us are cost conscious and you never know for sure if you’re going to like something new, so you can buy a handy 30g pouch for £4.49. This might seem a bit high but this is equal to 270g fresh berries. Also, unlike fresh berries that go soft within a week, there is no waste and you can keep using it in different ways over many months. I always compare the cost of clean food to the money we spend on other things, so this is the same price as two takeaway coffees. They will satisfy you for maybe 20 minutes and then are gone. Personally, I’d rather get a lot more value and goodness from one of these little berry packets instead.
If you’d like to try this one or any of their other berry powders, you can find them on the Finnberry website or on Amazon. You can follow their berry adventures on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
As always do let me know what you think and if you try it.
Much love,
Hedi
