This homemade oat milk is super easy, healthy, nutritious and oh-so-creamy. You only need 2 ingredients, a fine mesh sieve or a tea towel and a blender.
Oat milk has really become super popular over the last couple of years, so this has been highly requested recipe. Oat milk is very creamy, naturally sweet and perfect for those you can't drink almond or coconut milk.
Is It Cheaper To Make Your Own Oat Milk?
Shop-bought oat milk can get a bit expensive, but homemade oat milk is budget friendly, incredibly easy to make and can be used in baking, cooking or simple on its own. You only need a cup (90g) of oats, which works out around 20p and water. It doesn't get cheaper than this.
Does Homemade Oat Milk Froth?
Sadly it doesn't, because the shop bought versions often have thickeners and stabilisers added , but the homemade oat milk is so creamy you won't need it frothy. You can make the oat milk lighter or richer by increasing or decreasing the amount of water. More water, less creamy and less thick.
How Do You Make Homemade Oat Milk?
There are 100 of recipes out there for the best homemade milk, but here I am adding more own twist. The biggest take from this is to use ice cold water at all times and not over-blending; maximum 30 seconds.
THE INGREDIENTS:
- Oats - I use regular porridge oats, preferably gluten-free because that way you know nothing else has been added and it's only pure oats in the pack
- Water - You will need 4 cups to make for this recipe. If you want the oat milk to be thinner use more water
- Optional - sweetener is up to you. I sometimes add a touch of maple syrup or even one or two pitted dates. Vanilla extract is also nice as well as cinnamon. It just comes down to your preference.
THE METHOD:
- Soak - Start by soaking the oats in ice cold water at least for 4 hours or overnight in cold water. Add enough water to cover oats fully and pop it in the fridge.
- Strain - Using a fine-mesh sieve or tea towel strain the water
- Rinse - Rinse the oats in under ice cold running water until clear water starts coming out (roughly around 30 seconds)
- Blend - Place the oats in your blender, add 4 cups of ice cold water, close the lid and blend for around 20 - 30 seconds on high power. If you are using sweetener or any other add-ons place them in the blender together with the oats
- Strain Again - Once the oat milk has blended, strain the milk through the sieve or tea towel over a large bowl. You can strain the milk couple more times to ensure the milk is extra clean and smooth
- Store - Pour the strained oat milk to an airtight container, and place in the fridge if not using immediately. It will last for up to 5 days.
- Serve - Shake before serving as the oats may separate from the liquid, which is completely normal
What To Make With Homemade Oat Milk

- Serve with chocolate granola
- Make chia pudding
- Bake a tea cake
