Last week, I visited the beautiful island of Tenerife. My good friend Mark from Fountainfotos (check here his Instagram, he is so talented), asked me whether I fancied helping him with a little promotional video for an amazing hotel called Pearly Grey. Within seconds I said yes, not only because it meant visiting the largest of the seven Canary Islands, but so that I could also research the island to share with you how to eat clean and healthy in Tenerife.
While there I also filmed a quick recipe for you with Pearly Grey’s chef Darrell, to recreate Tenerife’s famous traditional salty potatoes. They are called Papas Arrugadas, also known as wrinkly potatoes! They are boiled in salty water (sea water is the best), and then served with two sauces; red mojo is hot and spicy and mojo verde is milder with parsley and coriander. It is a very simple but tasty recipe and the video will be shortly on my Facebook page. It is delicious on its own but also as a side dish, and definitively worth trying.
While in Tenerife, I discovered quite a few healthy restaurants. I don’t restrict food while on holiday, but instead, try to eat in a balanced way and not go overboard. Mediterranean food is known to be healthy and tasty, and this is especially so with Spanish flavours influenced by Latin American cuisine.
Think fresh fruit and veg sourced from local farms and local markets. This includes exotic fruit like papaya, dragon fruit and star fruit. They don’t taste anything like the ones you get in England!
If you like fish you will be in paradise; think fresh fish which is usually locally caught that morning before cooking. Dorada, similar to sea bream, is the most popular and usually served with salad and Canarias potatoes. There is also plenty of sea bass and an abundance of seafood including lobster, crab and mussels. I was pleasantly surprised how at many places they have gluten free and dairy free options too, especially when it comes to milk in your morning cuppa.
During my stay in Tenerife, these were my two favourite places:
Pearl Grey Ocean Club in Costa Calle La Lava, close to the town of Adece. Their Edge restaurant, with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, offers a brilliant variety of dishes.
I had Lebanese salad which consisted of falafels, hummus, cherry and sweetcorn salsa with leafy greens on the side.
Mark, who was the film maker, opted for beef salad which was tender beef slices with peppers, onions and cashew nuts, topped with a spicy chilli dressing. They have an amazing array of different salads, but not the kind that leaves you hungry after you’ve finished.
If you have a non-healthy eater with you (the husband usually :o), they can choose something like a chicken burger with chips.
Magic Lounge Club, based in Los Americas right next to the Hard Rock Café is the place to eat in Tenerife. Gluten free, vegan, vegetarian protein-based meals are all available – you name it and they serve it. Their selection of smoothies, salads and shared platters are incredible. Everything is fresh, sourced locally and prepared fresh on the spot. The one thing about fruit and vegetable in Tenerife is that each piece tastes like it should; the fruit is gorgeously juicy and the veggies are full of flavour and crunch. From smoothies to steaks, protein-based food to traditional dishes, Tenerife offers an incredible range of food. Healthy holidays here are no longer impossible or boring. Have you been to Tenerife?
